If a guy calls on a Sunday night, is it a safe assumption he is signaling only lukewarm interest?
A guy whom I’ve seen a few times in social contexts promised to call to "see about doing something this weekend". Well, I wasn’t holding my breath, and it’s a good thing, too, because he called on Sunday at 830 pm. If I’m not mistaken, the "He’s just not that into you" author specifically says that a guy who calls Sunday night - after the weekend is obviously over - is not interested. That was how I interpreted this guy’s gesture. So why call at all? Does he even want/expect me to call back, or is he actually just being polite and secretly hoping I drop the whole thing?

Interpreter, The (2005)

IMDB rating: 6.50

Plot: Escalating events begin when U.N. interpreter Silvia Broome alleges that she has overheard a death threat against an African head of state, spoken in a rare dialect few people other than Silvia can understand. With the words “The Teacher will never leave this room alive,” in an instant, Silvia’s life is turned upside down as she becomes a hunted target of the killers. Placed under the protection of federal agent Tobin Keller, Silvia’s world only grows more nightmarish. As Keller digs deeper into his eyewitnesses’ past and her secretive world of global connections, the more suspicious he becomes that she herself might be involved in the conspiracy. With every step of the way, he finds more reasons to mistrust her. Is Sylvia a victim? A suspect? Or something else entirely? And can Tobin, coping with his own personal heartache, keep her safe? Though they must depend on one another, Silvia and Tobin couldn’t be more different. Silvia’s strengths are words, diplomacy and the subtleties of meaning, while Tobin is all about instinct, action and reading into the most primal human behaviors. Now, as the danger of a major assassination on U.S. soil grows and Silvia’s life hangs in the balance, Silvia and Tobin play out a gripping dance of evasion and revelation that keeps them both guessing as they race to stop a terrifying international crisis before it’s too late.

with 127 different languages being spoken do you think we have enough immigrants?
it said on the news last night that in the town of reading berkshire there are 127 different languages being spoken.
yet gordon brown said that all immigrants in future must be able to speak english
so why are they all speaking these languages and who is paying to interpret them all.
do you think its time to call a halt to immigration and do away with all interpreters as the immigrants
will never bother to learn english when there is no reason to.
naty I am not moving goalposts, if you have come here to live in england then you must respect our traditions and language otherwise why did you come here, was it for the easy life.
I love france and go there on holiday, I dont wish to live there but I have tried to learn french to communicate with french people out of respect for their country and people.

Give them 6 months . no English ,,, get out and stay out , genuine immigrants will integrate and learn the language

they should all learn english
vanessa s | Feb 09, 2010

i have no problem with the amount of different languages as long as they are spoken in the house or in their social settings but not in schools. it should be the law that all kids must speak english as a first language in english schools, welsh for the welsh scots gallic for the scots (if required by that particular school district). it disgusts me that this government pays millions to interpreters in schools and hospitals and government buildings. they understand the claim forms for benefits quick enough, thats if they arent already translated into urdu or czech or whatever. but they can forget english when it suits them like in hospitals to get priority treatment (romanian gypos)

LOL.
Sure, keep moving the goalposts.
Many immigrants speak at least two languages but use their native tongue on a daily basis. See how far you can go with your attitude. Wishing you the best.

There is no need for immigrants to learn English because we spoon feed them each and every time they need to contact Councils or Police or indeed any organisation. The police for example HAVE to ensure they are given their rights (no complaint there) however that means the public purse has to be dipped into to get an interpretor for them. What does it cost the non speaking person? Absolutely nothing!
The government are now closing the stable door after the horse has bolted. It should have been mandatory for all immigrants to speak English.

traveller | Feb 09, 2010

Most immigrants do know english. But you can’t force ppl to speak it amongst themselves in their own families, of course they are going to speak their own. If you and your family moved to France you wouldn’t start speaking to your mother in French now would you?

Don’t you think it would be helpful if English people saw this as an opportunity? Everyone knows english are c*ap at learning languages, well now you’ve got 127 to choose from! Why don’t you use this knowledge? Be nice and they might teach you. Then you’ll have a whole world open up to you, full of opportunities & jobs all round the world.

Just think - by forcing English on the rest of the world, everyone knows exactly what you’re all saying but you have no clue what the rest of the world is saying about you!

The Only Good Indian
The Only Good Indian (2009)

IMDB rating: 7.60

Plot: Set in Kansas during the early 1900s, a teen-aged Native American boy (newcomer Winter Fox Frank) is taken from his family and forced to attend a distant Indian “training” school to assimilate into White society. When he escapes to return to his family, Sam Franklin (Wes Studi), a bounty hunter of Cherokee descent, is hired to find and return him to the institution. Franklin, a former Indian scout for the U.S. Army, has renounced his Native heritage and has adopted the White Man’s way of life, believing it’s the only way for Indians to survive. Along the way, a tragic incident spurs Franklin’s longtime nemesis, the famous “Indian Fighter” Sheriff Henry McCoy (J. Kenneth Campbell), to pursue both Franklin and the boy.

Directors: Willmott Kevin

Actors: Studi Wes,Campbell J. Kenneth,Frank Winter Fox,Butler Paul,Wheatley Christopher,Robbins Blake,Geer Kevin,Niven Kip,Graham T. Max,Midthunder David,Allegrucci Scott,Western,

Why is my Indian friend so withdrawn?
My Indian friend, Nikhil, seems withdrawn and unhappy. He used to be the most carefree of Indians, but frankly he seems stressed and anxious. He’s in his third year of a heavy course, and I think this might be causing him some problems. He always used to think of India as his home, and he just studied here (in England). But now he’s realised that he’s going to have to move away from his family.

He’s irritable and unhappy, he doesn’t laugh like he used to. He’s always tired.

What’s wrong with him?

sounds like he’s home sick, i mean imagine if you found out you had to move away from your family to someplace far away and can’t go back for a long time. wouldn’t you be upset and stressed to? sheesh, seems obvious given the explanation, sorry for the crankiness

American Splendor

American Splendor
American Splendor (2003)

IMDB rating: 7.70

Plot: Harvey Pekar is file clerk at the local VA hospital. His interactions with his co-workers offer some relief from the monotony, and their discussions encompass everything from music to the decline of American culture to new flavors of jellybeans and life itself. At home, Harvey fills his days with reading, writing and listening to jazz. His apartment is filled with thousands of books and LPs, and he regularly scours Cleveland’s thrift stores and garage sales for more, savoring the rare joy of a 25-cent find. It is at one of these junk sales that Harvey meets Robert Crumb, a greeting card artist and music enthusiast. When, years later, Crumb finds international success for his underground comics, the idea that comic books can be a valid art form for adults inspires Harvey to write his own brand of comic book. An admirer of naturalist writers like Theodore Dreiser, Harvey makes his American Splendor a truthful, unsentimental record of his working-class life, a warts-and-all self portrait. First published in 1976, the comic earns Harvey cult fame throughout the 1980s and eventually leads him to the sardonic Joyce Barber, a partner in a Delaware comic book store who end ups being Harvey’s true soul mate as they experience the bizarre byproducts of Harvey’s cult celebrity stature.

Is there a movie as great/awesome/excellent/brilliant/good/outstanding/epic as…?
Is there a movie as great/awesome/excellent/brilliant/good/outstanding/epic as…Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather and Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane? You guys have to think of any. Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather and Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane are among the movies that pretty much set the standard for great/awesome/excellent/brilliant/good/outstanding/epic movies. You can say movies like the original Star Wars movies, Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and even James Cameron’s Avatar, and I will accept them or so. Well, even with the low budget and Mercury Theater actors, and even with the combination of the splendor and stratospheric production values of the Old Hollywood and the shock of the New Wave (be it French or American), Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane and Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather pretty much has no excuse to be how great/awesome/excellent/brilliant/good/outstanding/epic they are. Of course Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane was widely considered to be one of, if not, the greatest movie ever made and of all time, which the American Film Institute pretty much did in 1998 by voting it number one out of 100 of the greatest movies of the 20th Century.

Well, can you guys name any contenders for movies that are as great/awesome/excellent/brilliant/good/outstanding/epic as Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane and Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather? Well, can you?

Avatar. In reality, the love story mixed with a fantasy world and brilliantly designed alien people was indescribable. Some people said it was cliche at times (Like Jake Sully’s speech, in which, I somewhat agree), but the movie wasn’t bad at all. I loved it so much I saw it four times in 3D. If you’d have seen it, and you really enjoy every little detail that went into that movie to make it special (such as the special effects, which wasn’t all about visual purposes, but to capture the story in a giant nutshell), I believe it is a flawless movie. All those words you described those other movies, double them and you’ve got Avatar.
Remy | Jan 09, 2010

Sorry to dissappoint you but I have to say there is no movie that are better than citizen kane and ght godfather in that category. As a movie fanatic, I’d thought long and hard an researched, but I have to say, overall, there is no better. For the person who said avater, I have to admit the visuals on the big screen in 3D was absoulutely stunning and that set the already high bar even higher in that regards. The action was really good, and I really enjoyed some of the characters (especially that trigger happy army dude with the scars) Howver, some of the acting did sound a bit forced, and the plot device has been used so many times by movies that were actually better, so I wouldn’t say Avatar is the best thing ever.

Rashid Latif Launches Karachi Champions League ,Your Comments?
Former Pakistan wicketkeeper Rashid Latif and the Karachi city government have come together to launch, from next week, what might be the most lucrative club tournament to have been played in Pakistan.

The Karachi Champions League, a Twenty20 league, for the leading clubs of the city will begin next week with Rs 10 million (around USD 117,200) as the top prize for the winners. The tournament, a brainchild of Latif and the Rashid Latif Cricket Academy (RLCA) will feature a number of Karachi-based international players, as well as a host of domestic cricketers. Younis Khan, Shahid Afridi, Khalid Latif, Fawad Alam, Khurram Manzoor and Sarfraz Ahmed, among others, will be playing.

"It was an old idea of mine, one that I had been working on," Latif, who captained Pakistan as well, told Cricinfo. "I am a big follower of English football and I love the history of clubs over there, like Chelsea and Fulham. We have so many old clubs in Karachi and we need to revive that club culture once again here."

The idea was put into practice after Latif ran the idea by the city’s mayor Mustafa Kamal during what was supposed to be a five-minute meeting. "We ran the idea by him and he agreed after a minute," Latif said. The prize money has been put up by Kamal’s city government; as well as the winning club getting Rs 10 million, the runners-up will receive Rs 5 million (around USD 58,900), the semi-finalists Rs 500,000 (around USD 5900) each and the quarter-finalists Rs 250,000 (around USD 2900). All told there is Rs 17 million (nearly USD 200,000) in prize money at stake, easily the most lucrative local tournament in the country’s history.

The tournament is expected to last nearly a month and will be played at various grounds around the city that are supervised and run by the RLCA. Malir Gymkhana, North Nazimabad CC, Korangi Al-Fatah CC and Airport Gymkhana are some of the more renowned 16 clubs in the tournament and each will be allowed only one international player.

The tournament will be televised on Geo Super, a local sports channel and plans are already underway to make it a national league - the Pakistan Champions League. "Karachi is the financial centre of Pakistan and a lot of MNCs are based here," Latif said. "The plan is to get them to sponsor a club each. Next season we will introduce player trading and hopefully in time, it can be pushed to a national league."

Blink (1994)

IMDB rating: 6.10

Plot: Twenty years ago, 8-year-old Emma Brody’s abusive mother smashed Emma’s face into a bathroom mirror just for pilfering in the mother’s makeup drawer. Today, Emma is an independent, self-assured woman who plays violin in a popular Celtic folk band in Chicago. Emma lives life on her own terms, only without sight — the result of the traumatic injuries to her eyes at the hands of her mother. Luckily for Emma, medical science has vaulted a quantum leap in the past two decades. Now, thanks to corneal implants installed by her kindly eye surgeon, Dr. Ryan Pierce, Emma can see again. Emma’s sight is at first cloudy, and she suffers from “retroactive hallucinations,” a clinically documented syndrome in which the newly sighted sometimes “see” things hours, or even days, after they actually happen. This becomes a big problem when Emma sees a suspicious man leaving her neighbor’s apartment at 4AM, but his features appear to her only in flashback later that morning. After failing to get a response at the neighbor’s door, Emma tries to convince detective John Hallstrom and his partner Tom Ridgely to check things out. At first, Hallstrom dismisses Emma as a nutcase, but when the cops finally arrive on the scene, they find the guy murdered, using the same MO as a series of killings that Hallstrom and Ridgely are already investigating. Emma herself is in danger, because she’s the only person who can identify the killer. Hallstrom’s colleagues remain doubtful because Emma’s vision flawed. When the killer begins to stalk Emma, Hallstrom has her placed under police protection, and the two soon become lovers while Hallstrom tries to figure out who the killer is.
